This Is Not An Exit

This is not an exit. Standing at the entranceway to new space, tell yourself this is not an exit, it’s an entrance. So many doors, too many choices, it is all so confusing. Which ones can I open? What waits behind? Are you in a room that you want to leave? Maybe if you keep checking in the unlocked doors, you can find a way to a better place.

You can follow the easy path, waiting for the obvious and safe way forward to reveal itself. Cruise on through and believe it that you are reaching your potential. Go with the flow and stay on a wide path. That’s one way to go with things and one of the more popular choices that get made. That’s been my default to return to after each creative defeat, open that easy door, settle.

The time comes when you are weary, down and out, feeling low, and all you want to do is lie down and wallow in self-pity. Take on the fetal position and hope someone recognizes your worth as they move past you. Or stop eyeing others with envy, playing the victim, and talking about how others are less worthy than you to their blessings.

Instead, use the energy to stand up and try a door you thought was locked. If it doesn’t open, don’t move to the next door. Ask yourself, do you need to find out what’s on the other side? If you want to know just a tiny bit, you need to kick it down. Knock the door down, take whatever you have, and trash the door.

Remember that as long as your breathing, victory is possible. Every obstacle is surmountable. Every doorway is an entrance to a new room in the mansion of your life, and this is not an exit.
